Diabetes Prevention Partnership Timiskaming

WHAT IS THE DIABETES PREVENTION PARTNERSHIP TIMISKAMING (DPPT)?

The DPPT is a group of local community partners working prevent type 2 diabetes in our community. Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that impacts our daily life and, over time, can lead to serious health issues and decrease quality of life. In Timiskaming (2011-2014), 16.1% reported being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by a health care provider.

The DPPT offers programs and activities in two main areas – healthy eating and physical activity. Local partners are diverse, including: Timiskaming Health Unit, Timiskaming Diabetes Program, Canadian Mental Health Association, Family Health Teams, Town of Kirkland Lake and the Temiskaming Hospital. 

 

Food Skills for Families

 

CURRENT PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES:

  • Fresh Start – a 12-month behaviour change program for those wanting to improve their lifestyle and health, delivered by health care professionals. See more information here 
  • Food Skills for Families (FSFF) -  a food literacy program combining a hands-on component in the kitchen with knowledge sharing about healthy eating. FSFF was originally developed by Diabetes Canada, and is now under the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control. Check Food Skills for Families for more info about the program.   • Pole Walking program – urban Poles are available to use at your local library and at various agencies in your community – Call the number below to find out more!
