Extreme Weather

Extreme weather events can occur when high temperatures and other weather conditions such as humidity, or very low temperatures and wind chill, occur that are significantly different than normal.

Climate change is causing extreme weather events to become a growing public health risk in Canada. Climate change from rising global temperatures can contribute to an increase in extreme weather events. 

Extreme weather can include:

  • Extreme heat
  • Extreme cold
  • Storms

These events can lead to:

  • Drought
  • High levels of precipitation and flooding. 
  • Wildfires
  • Power outages

Protecting Your Health in Extreme Weather

Extreme heat and extreme cold can both affect health in dangerous ways, but there are things you can do to protect yourself and loved ones from experiencing these effects.
