Many local organizations in Timiskaming are partnering in the development of a community drug and alcohol strategy. Since forming in early 2021, TDAS members have worked to gather and assess available information to inform a strategy, inclusive of recommendations for action, to improve the current situation in Timiskaming (inclusive of the Municipality of Temagami).

Goal

To prevent and reduce the harms associated with substances to improve the quality of life of all Timiskaming residents.

Approach

An evidence-informed framework is being used to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive approach. The four pillars work together to address community needs and create solutions that make sense in the local context.

  • Prevention: prevent high-risk substance use.
  • Harm reduction: reduce the negative effects of substance use without requiring a person to quit.
  • Treatment: support innovative approaches to treatment and recovery.
  • Community safety: reduce criminal activity and community safety issues associated with substance use while developing trusting relationships with all community members.

The Strategy

A document has been created to outline the actions to take locally to prevent and reduce the harms associated with substances to improve the quality of life of all Timiskaming residents. You can see this document here.
